All-Star Game Thoughts
For those who have read Matthew Berry of ESPN’s TRUM blog, they know TRUM stands for “Thoughts, Ramblings, Useless information and Musings.” While I don’t always find his writing interesting, I figured I’ll write down some of my observations for the game.
- Willie Mays is one of the best to ever play the game. Watching him walk through the outfield with all the stars around him was just an amazing sight.
- I will take Ozzie Smith to read my lineup card over Cal Ripken Jr. any day. God, if only the Wizard of Oz did a back flip to end his segment.
- Jose Reyes can win any game by himself, just with his speed.
- Griffey Jr.’s swing is as pretty as always.
- Prince Fielder with Korean tattoo on his neck?!? Random, and I can’t decide if that is lamer than non-sense Chinese tattoo.
- Dane Cook sucks (for those who didn’t watch the game, Dane Cook had a commercial talking about the playoffs).
- Cole Hamels said during the spring training that he can win 20 games this season, well, he is sitting on 10W before the All-Star Break. Damn. Did I mention he is only 23?
- A Rod hit, stole a base, and misplayed a bounce by the 3rd base line. Typical.
- I still don’t like Jorge Posada.
- Ichiro with the first inside-the-park homerun in the All-Star game history, I am glad that Seattle is trying keep with a 5-year extension.
- Eric Byrnes’ dog is a better swimmer than I am.
- If only Chien-Ming Wang didn’t get hurt and missed the beginning of the season, he probably will have a better shot at earning a spot in the All-Star roster. 9-4 in 15 starts, with ERA of 3.36. Without him and A Rod, I can’t imagine where the Yankees would be. San Francisco would be a nearly perfect city for such a feat.
- Not a single Harry Potter commercial on the eve of its opening day? I understand that it is not something that NEEDS commercials, but I thought there would at least a couple?
- WTF is Paula Cole?
- Johan Santana as a middle relief in the 7th inning, that is just not fair.
- Sprint has one of the coolest commercials I have seen in a while.
- “Spider pig, spider pig, does whatever spider pig does.”
- Barry Bonds, Junior, Trevor Hoffman. 3 men that just keep playing and playing well.
- I want a poster of that picture of the super old umpire standing in between the fighting A Rod and Jason Varitek.
- Seriously, that old umpire has more hits than the whole NL line up. On him that is. Ouch.
- J.J. Putz is just nasty, 0.88 ERA and is only 2nd best next to Hideki Okajima, who didn’t even get to pitch tonight, AL is just stacked with superb pitchers from SP to CL.
- Why isn’t there a pinch runner for Dmitri Young?! I am pretty sure even a pitcher can run faster than him, bottom of the 9th with 2 outs, you gotta try to manufacture some runs!
- Never mind, Soriano just cranked one over the right fence, Young can jog, no problem.
- J.J Hardy played like a MVP during April and May, but he needs to work on adjusting as pitchers started figuring him out in June, batted only .220.
- That was a strike out for Derrek Lee. NL got lucky. K-Rod lost his control over the missed call, giving NL a chance. Too bad Aaron Rowand came short.
It was definitely a thrilling game, having the NL came close at the bottom of the 9th. Ichiro was a fitting MVP, although I thought he knew enough English that he doesn’t need an interpreter. Overall, it was a great time in SF, and I wish Barry Bonds had done better at home.
