Fantasy Baseball Notes - Trade Deadline Special! (7/30)
It’s been a busy weekend with family visiting me in DC, hopefully I have enough stuff to talk about today~
There has not been any major deals, but lets look at some of the trades that took place in the past couple days and the ones that may happen in the next 40 hours.
- Kenny Lofton back to Cleveland for catching prospect Max Ramirez: all you need to know about this trade is that Lofton now gets to run behind Grady Sizemore and is going to score tons of runs. GOOD for fantasy owners.
- Ty Wigginton to Houston for Dan Wheeler: I am not even going to waste my time talking about Wheeler, his value was long gone when he went through a back-to-back-to-back outings giving out 3 or more runs. He wasn’t no longer a factor in Houston, he will be just as irrelevant in Tampa. What? Al Reyes may get traded? Oh great, Wheelers can BLOW MORE SAFES. As for Wiggy, Minute Maid Park will be good for his power as a right hander. He will see more time at 3rd base, which doesn’t really matter to us because Wiggy is the type of player that give him a glove and a bat, he will do enough so you won’t complain. He is not going to do worse, but I bet he will be BETTER in a new uniform and new park.
- Scott Linebrink is now a Brewer: I am not a huge fan of using setup men, have a solid rotation, play the waiver wire for SVs, use the extra spots for spot-up starts. Linebrink, along with Shields of the Angels or Broxton of the Dodgers are elite middle relievers who can give you some consistent innings with nice amount of Ks. This trade is more important to the Brewers than to you, they want to reinforce their image as a contender. Linebrink’s stats has been declining for the past seasons, so unless you are playing in some super deep league where any K counts, FIND SOMEONE ELSE. IMHO, I rather take a gamble on Davd Bush or some other under performing SPs.
Rumors!
- Mark Teixeira is the one big name everyone is talking about. Some said that he is a good buy low option, trade for him whether he switches team or not, blah blah blah. Seriously, by this point of the season, he is not playing like the elite 1B he used to be. If he wants to prove himself, well, let him do it and take a gamble next year. Unless you can low ball someone for him, don’t bother breaking your bank. Instead, find a Chris Duncan owner who is still skeptical about his power and steal him over.
- Where is Dotel going? The guy wants to talk contract extension with the Royals, doesn’t he watch ESPN or listen to radio or something? Depending on his destination, he is not guarantee a closer job. The Mets was looking at having Dotel back, but apparently the price is too steep. The Dodgers remain the front runner with Royals drooling over young SS Chin-Lung Hu, although the Dodgers are reluctant to let go to Taiwanese prospect for a rental either. If you are a Dotel owner, BE AWARE. Looks like most teams are interested in having Dotel as a setup man.
- My favorite rumor so far: the Mets and the Devil Rays are talking about shipping Lasting Milledge + a minor league pitcher for *GASP* Carl Crawford. It sounds so unbelievable that it makes me giggle. Crawford + Reyes 1-2 punch? Game over. I wouldn’t get my hopes up, but just like the folks at MLB Trade Rumors, it’s too fun to pass up. As for fantasy outcome? Well Crawford will be Crawford, but ON CRACK in that Mets lineup. I still have HOPE for Milledge, and perhaps he just needs a new organization to go nuts. The +1 pitcher could be Mike Pelfrey, I would hate to see him go, but even though Tampa needs pitching, Pelfrey is not NOW, at least he hasn’t shown us, so he is not going to have much impact in the next couple years.
Gotta love the trade deadline and all the talk, I’ll try to keep up with the transactions if any notable trades come up. Thanks to MLB Trade Rumors for all the scoops! Going to translate a couple more J-Train blogs when I have to time, but with the rents here, we’ll see.
