Follow Up on Rick Ankiel…Trialing Bonds Only by 753
If you haven’t seen it on ESPN’s, watch it NOW.
Rick Ankiel of the St. Louis Cardinals hit 2HR today, marked the 3rd one in 2 games. We already knew he could hit, but he apparently can catch as well, making an incredible catch in the 8th inning. With the Brewers slumping and the Cubs hurting, here comes the Cards. The feel good story, inspiring fans and teammates. Just take a look at Tony La Russa next game, he is a lot more animated in the dugout and he is ready to win some games. What a difference Ankiel is making.
Now, fantasy baseball wise, is Ankiel going to inspire the rest of your team and make a push for first place (or extend your lead)? Don’t count on it. He is going to give you some pop, and will you give you some stats during the first week or 2, but pitchers are going to figure him out once they have enough ABs on him. Ankiel had an alarming walk-K ratio of nearly 1-to-4 in AAA this year. He did have over 30HR which is translating nicely so far, but he is going to hurt your AVG once the honeymoon is over. So be aware when you pick him up.
Here is another name to look out for — Marcus Thames of the Tigers. He was red hot before hitting the DL, which was terribly timing for him. Yet, it looks like he is wasting now time to pick up where he left off, hitting 5 out of 11 in the past 3 games with 2 HRs. The Tigers are slumping and Thames might be just what they need while Sheff rest his shoulder. Thames also will hurt your AVG, but just like any other hot bats, get them now before they cool off.
