Fantasy Baseball Notes (8/20)

Man, I feel like I don’t write enough my own stuff, all I do is translating Joseph’s articles and work on the theme of the website…

On the rise:

  • Johnny Damon (NYY - OF): After a frustrating season, Damon seem to remember how to play baseball, as of the rest of the Yankees. For the past month, Damon is batting .360, with 4SB and a OPS of .964. If you have been waiting on him to wake up, well, the wait appears to be over, active him now.
  • Brian Hennesey (SF - RP): Brian Wilson picked up his first SV on Monday night, but don’t worry about the older Brian. Hennesey did pick up 3 consecutive SVs over the weekend so you gotta give him some break. However, like I mentioned in my previous fantasy note that Wilson will be the one to take over Hennesey’s job if he shows signs of ineffectiveness. Hennesey never had great track records as a relief pitcher or even a closer so use him wisely.
  • Cameron Maybin (DET - OF): Detroit’s super prospect finally got called up. During his first 3 games against the Yankees, he only had 2 hits in one game, and went 0-for during the other two. I don’t expect him to have Ryan Braun kind of stats, but he is not a super prospect for no reason. Keep an eye on him, you might like what you see.

On the decline / Be aware:

  •  Yovani Gallardo (MIL - SP): After a promising start, he got KILLED for the past 2 games. Today he bounced back with a strong outing against the Diamondbacks, going 6 innings and gave up 5 hits and no earned runs. Does it mean he is back to must start status? Nope. His next game is possibly against the Giants. He beat them last time but it wasn’t dominating. With the Giants coming off a 5-game winning streak to close out their road trip, the game will be far from safe bet for Gallardo. So be aware.
  • Matt Kemp (LAD - OF): He used to be all hitting, but a little bit of knee injury is holding him back at the moment. If your team needs a spark, and you have to pick someone from the FA since its past the trade deadline, look else where. Unless he shows signs of improvement with that knee, you can get power and AVG somewhere else.
  • David Bush / Chris Capuano (MIL - SP): Oops, looks like I just covered 3/5 of the Brewers rotation. I can’t help it, partially because both Bush and Capuano came into the season as fantasy contributors and well, they are not contributing. Many people already dropped them months again, and many kept their eyes on them, hoping they will bounce back. My take: give up. Many people argued Bush’s high ERA and low WHIP last season was a sign, and it finally has caught up to him. I still think he may be a fantasy-worthy pitcher in the future, just not this season. Same with Capuano, his 18-W season in 2005 looks more and more like a one year wonder. He has more to prove than Bush, before being considered useful.

Man, it’s kinda hard to write about fantasy towards the end of the season since the trade deadline has ended for most leagues so writing about people like Johnny Damon makes it kinda pointless because it is not likely that you can find Damon in the FA. So I tried to find more guys that can help your team off the waiver wire, new call ups and such. Hopefully some of you will enjoy this =)
