Fantasy Baseball Notes (8/26)

As I mentioned in my previous Fantasy Notes, it’s near the end of the season, you can’t exactly make trades to get some big names to help. So it’s really about the waiver wires and find a hot hand before the others, so today I’ll talk about a couple players that may give you a spark to secure a spot in the playoffs, or extend your lead.

  • Nate McLouth (PIT-OF): Who? Baseball Prospectus 2007 gave McLouth some harsh words as Pittsburgh stacked themselves with what BP called “FOGies” and that would be Fourth Outfielder Guys. However, the guy suddenly found a power stroke in August, hammering 7 HRs so far, which is pretty darn close to people like A-Rod (8), Prince Fielder (9), Adrian Gonzalez (7), and more than David Ortiz (5) and Ryan Howard (4). McLouth will never be as good as any of the names above, but what do you care? He also only batted .262 in the past month, but the power plus the 6SB makes him attractive as a rental before someone wakes him up.
  • Derek Lowe (LAD-SP): Lowe may not be available in too many leagues, but in several leagues he got dropped due to nagging injuries. But he did win his past 2 outings, going 7 innings in both of them and gave up a total of 3 runs. His next 2 opponents are the Nationals at home and Padres at San Diego, both not known for offense and both pitchers’ parks. You may be able to squeeze a couple Ws from him.
  • Jeremy Hermida (FLA-OF): Who would have thought staying healthy helps? Hermida went through July batting .338 with OBP of .426. He continues his hot streak in August, currently sitting at .375 with 4HRs in 64 ABs. He was once a top prospect, the only thing will stop him is his health. So grab him before he pulls a hammy.
  • Rafael Soriano/Octavio Dotel (ATL-RP): Bobby Wickman just got DFA, so someone has to close for the Braves. Dotel is on the DL so Soriano is the most logical choice for the time being. Although Soriano isn’t having the best summer, posting ERA greater than 4 for the past 2 months, but like I said, someone has to close and Soriano will likely to get a few before Dotel comes back. The latest update on Dotel is that he felt pain in his right triceps during a session on Friday, so who knows when he can come back? If you need help in the SV category, which most people do, look no further.
  • Kaz Matsui (COL-2B): Batting over .300, OBP of .389 and 11SB in August. Just like SVs, almost everyone can use SB and a 2B. He is a little banged up, but he helps you in the thin categories.
  • David Wells (LAD-SP): He just found a new job, and in another pitchers park. He is not going to turn your rotation around, but he might just squeeze a W or 2 with you that helps you in some pitching categories. Case and point, he beat the Mets today going 5 innings and holding the NL East top team to 2 runs. Just saying.

Hope this will help you guys
