Make A Wish with Wang

Paul’s Note: The following article was posted on 9/19. For the original article in Traditional Chinese, click HERE.

It’s been awhile since I posted here, work has been rather frustrating, my boss and colleagues’ different opinions prevent me to do what I want to do. As results, often I just can’t get myself out of the slump to write for this blog. Many of you already know the situation, so I don’t have to waste anytime on it.

Yesterday, a 16-year-old Taiwanese girl came to the stadium to meet with Chien-Ming Wang, almost all Taiwanese media covered this event, even Peter Abraham dedicated a post on his blog for it.

As for my article, it was originally published on World Journal (article in Mandarin-Chinese), special thanks to Jose Hsu’s photos.

  • Organized by Make-A-Wish Foundation in Taiwan and the US, Chieh-Ju Tsai arrived at the Yankee Stadium from Taiwan on the 18th to meet with her idol - Chien-Ming Wang. The 16-year old Chieh-Ju Tsai has a rare blood disease (Paul’s note: I believe it may be thalassemia, not sure), but is still an excellent student. She was accepted to the “Taipei First Girls’ High School” this past summer (Paul’s note: it is one of the most prestigious high schools Taiwan) for her excellence in academics. She flew to New York from Taiwan on the 16th, and finally got to meet Wang on the 18th.Chieh-Ju Tsai not only got to sit in the dugout, she also took pictures with players like A-Rod and Derek Jeter. However, the highlight was the day was meeting Chien-Ming Wang in person, and receiving a signed jersey from him. For her, they were the most precious memories of all. Chieh-Ju Tsai said: “Chien-Ming Wang is the most popular celebrity in Taiwan!”

As for Wang, he was very touched for Chieh-Ju Tsai to come all the way from Taiwan. “I am honored, and would like to help however I can,” said Wang.

Wang is scheduled to pitch on the 21st, “I told Chien-Ming Wang that I hope he can win the game for me!” said Tsai.

J-Train writes for the Word Journal, one of the bigger Mandarin news paper in North America, in NYC. He spends most of his time covering Asian athletes, with focus on Chien-Ming Wang and the New York Yankees. He recently became the first Taiwanese baseball writer to join the Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBWAA). For more of his articles, you may go to The J-Train Blog (it’s in Traditional Chinese), or click HERE for my translated ones. For those English speaking fans, HAKANIN.com will continue to provide the translated version of his articles, so stay tuned!
