Fantasy Baseball Notes - NL Fantasy All-Star Team!
Phew, the season is almost over, and I found myself cursing over the Mets more than my own team…my fantasy team chocked and lost the semifinals so that was a lame way to end a great season after entering the playoffs with a 18 game lead. Certainly praying the Mets won’t chock either.
Anyway, I am going to make up for my lack of posts in September by talking about a couple things in the next couple notes:
- NL Fantasy All-Star Team.
- AL Fantasy All-Star Team.
- Most Underachieving List
- One Year Wonders
- Injury Bug Attack! Who To Bounce Back in 2008?
- Sleepers Watch (Already!?)
Yeah, there are a couple games left, but by this time we already know who really helped your team and who was just wasting a spot on your roster. So let’s begin with my NL Fantasy All-Star Team!
[EDIT] Oops, totally dropped the ball on this one, can’t believe I skipped the SS position. as much as I want to put Jose Reyes there, the winner is Hanley Ramirez. Since I am currently at work, I won’t go into too much details and write it out, but I will fix it up ASAP. Sorry about that.
- C - Russel Martin (LAD): The Canadian catcher came out and am 2 HR shy of 20-20 while batting about .300 throughout the season. Cather is already a thin position and to have Martin staying healthy and post such numbers, not to mention his owners probably snatched him rounds after people went nuts over Joe Mauer and Victor Martinez (averaging at pick 170 for ESPN), he still out performs the others and deserve to be up here.
- 1B - Prince Fielder (MIL): The Fresh Prince of Milwaukee pulled out monster numbers in his 2nd full season. The fact that Pujols is having power shortage and Ryan Howard slowed down by injury just made the pick easier. AVG.289 48HR 115RBI, he is making it clear that he wants the MVP trophy.
- 2B - Brandon Phillips (CIN): Before the season, one may say this spot is reserve for Chase Utley, and Brandon Phillips, is no longer the top prospect Cleveland Indians once considered. Oh boy, Utley went down with injury and Phillips is one HR away from 30-30. The end.
- 3B - David Wright (NYM): Speaking of 30-30, my boy David Wright so happened to have done the same thing. Currently 30-34 up to date while batting .323 with 105RBI. Wright is not only making a case for regular season MVP, but also making many owners happy. The fun part? He is only 24 and his power will continue to improve as he gets better.
- SS - Hanley Ramirez (FLA): You can make an argument to have the big 3 SS here - Ramirez, Jose Reyes, and Jimmy Rollins. These 3 remind me the A-Rod, Jeter, and Miguel Tejada glory days. Reyes, despite single-handedly won the SB categories for many owners, his AVG and power are the lowest of all 3. Ramirez was 1 HR short of 30-30, had the advantage over Rollins for AVG and SB by a long shot so fantasy wise this was a pretty easy choice.
- OF - Matt Holliday (COL): Sure, the Coors effect are nice (25HR, .375AVG), but Holliday is pretty good on the road, too (11HR, .298AVG). Just very recently he was leading the NL in hits (205), RBI (131), extra-base hits (89), doubles (48), and total bases (371). Doesn’t matter if he ends up winning those categories in real life, he certainly is one of the best in 2007, and will likely to repeat for years to come.
- OF - Eric Byrnes (ARI): Not gonna lie, I am surprise with how well Byrnes plays this year, and skeptical with the stats line. Yet I cannot argue that his 47SB, 21HR, and .289AVG make an impressive stat line. I am still skeptical about him, and will not touch him in next season’s draft, but for those owners who stood by him, or picked him up midseason, I am sure he helped you out tremendously.
- OF - N/A. Sure, you can put Carlos Lee here, .300AVG, 31HR, 115RBI, or Adam Dunn and his 40HRs, or Carlos Beltran. But none of them really stood out. Lee is good, but other than the RBIs you can probably replace him with a lesser guy. Adam Dunn’s AVG kills you. Beltran would be a good fit, but he ran into slumps and injuries, and ended up with stats that are only respectable for someone Beltran’s caliber. Perhaps if Alfonzo Soriano didn’t pull his hammy, he might have more SBs than his current 19, which is not what fantasy owners spending first round picks for.
- SP - Jake Peavy (SD): 18W, checked. 233K, checked. 2.36ERA, checked. 1.03WHIP, checked. End of conversation.
- CL - Jose Valerde (ARI): One of the main reasons Arizona is winning their division. Projected to be the teams closer for years, Valerde only teased owners in the past season with flash of brilliance but never truly reliable. 46SV, 2.70ERA and 1.11WHIP will certainly temp some owners to draft him too early, but perhaps he will be worthy. Certainly pitch like a top CL this year.
There you go, my NL Fantasy All-Star team. Next time we will visit their counterparts in the AL.
