Fantasy Baseball Notes - AL Fantasy All-Star Team!
Alright, feeling slightly better today, so let’s talk about some fantasy baseball!
Last week I mentioned that there are a couple posts coming up to wrap up 2007, here is the list!
- NL Fantasy All-Star Team
- AL Fantasy All-Star Team
- Most Underachieving List
- One Year Wonders
- Injury Bug Attack! Who To Bounce Back in 2008?
- Sleepers Watch
And my AL All-Star Team roster look like this:
- C - Victor Martinez (CLE): Yes, Jorge Posada pulled out career numbers, but if we compare the two players, Posada has the edge in R and AVG while Martinez gives you power and RBI. Posada’s production can be explained by the potent lineup of the Yankees that he has better protection around him. The offense also lead to higher scoring games thus Posada scored more runs. Now looking at Martinez, with Travis Hafner having a down year, he was the heart and soul of the lineup and carried the team. Fantasy-wise, Martinez led all catchers with HRs and RBIs with better than respectable R and AVG. You have to go with Martinez.
- 1B - Carlos Pena (TB): Let’s see, Pena went undrafted in almost all leagues, and as a FA pick up, he gave you 46HR with 121RBI. With Mark Teixeira moving to NL and former MVP Justin Morneau unable to pull off another magical 2nd half, Pena is the clear choice.
- 2B - B.J. Upton (TB): To be honest, I had a hard time picking between Upton and Brian Roberts of the Orioles. B.J. Upton surprised everyone by finishing the season with .300 AVG and a 20-20 (24-22 to be exact), and the injury he suffered midseason caused him a 30-30. Roberts’ only edge is SB, doubling what Upton had. But what I love about Upton is the fact that he can play multiple positions so he not only gave the owners great stats as a 2B, but so much flexibility as an option to go around.
- 3B - Alex Rodriguez (NYY): Final stat line for A-Rod - .314AVG, 54HR, 143R, 156RBI, and 24SB. Check mate.
- SS - Carlos Guillen (DET): Another tough choice to make. While Guillen has an advantage over Jeter in HR and RBI, Jeter trashed Guillen in AVG. But the one thing that won me over for Guillen is that owners can get him rounds later. Sometimes it is not just the stat that helps your team, but the idea of building the best players around. So the idea of getting a guy rounds later that would give similar stats so I can grab another ace or take advantage of weak positions like C or 2B makes him valuable as well.
- OF - Magglio Ordonez (DET): AL batting champ with 28HR and 139RBI with 542B. This guy is a RBI machine!
- OF - Ichiro Suzuki (SEA): Here is a guy that will save your AVG and SB category every year. And 2007 is no exception. .351AVG, 37SB, and 111R. He will help you ease the pain Adam Dunn causes you.
- OF - Curtis Granderson (DET): Another Tiger OF, Granderson joined the exclusive 20-20-20-20 club in 2007. He continuously improve his weakness, which is OBS and high K rate. He cut it down this year and raised his OBS from a .335 to .361. Outside of that, his OPS of .913 is pretty incredible as a leadoff hitter and is certainly welcomed by fantasy owners.
- SP - C.C. Sabathia (CLE): C.C. Sabathia was the missing piece for the Indians last years. After hurting himself in the opener, Sabathia was not healthy in 2006. 2007 was a different story, posting Cy Young numbers, his 19W and 209K and other outstanding stats not only led the Indians to the playoffs, but helped his owners tremendously.
- J.J. Putz (SEA): Putz was possibly the most dominatd CL in 2007, notching 40SV with an incredible 1.38ERA and .70 WHIP. His SV number slowed down towards the end of the season as the Mariners struggled to win games, but he still had an edge over other CL who might have more SVs but far worse in other categories.
There you go, my AL Fantasy All-Star team of 2007! I think if I find the time, I might do a supplementary “Honorable Mention” list since I know there are a couple guys that helped their owner a whole lot but might not have done enough to be the MVP~
