FAQ
Here are some questions that I think some of you may have, so I dedicated a page for it =)
- WTF does “Hakanin” mean?
- Haka, or Hakka as some may spell it differently, is a local dialect spoke in parts of West coast Taiwan. It is similar to Cantonese. “Hakanin” means “People of Haka” in, you guessed it, Haka.
- Who says “preace”? That’s so lame!
- Well, my friends and I do. It is silly, but so is “teh” “zomg” and any other online speak.
- Who is J-Train, and why do you keep translating his articles?
- Joseph Liao, also known as J-Train, is a sports writer for World Journal, one of the biggest Mandarin newspaper in North America. He has been covering the New York Yankees for the past 3 years, with focus on Chien-Ming Wang, a Taiwanese pitcher. Joseph recently became the first Taiwanese baseball writer to join the Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBWAA). He often shares many insights of the game with his fans on his personal blog (http://jtrain-tpmbny.blogspot.com), and because all of his articles are written in Traditional Chinese, I got his permission to translate them into English, in order to share them with non-Chinese speaking fans.
- Your profile picture, in the About page, are those facial hair real?
- What do you think? *grin*
- Your favortie sports teams?
- NY Mets for baseball, Orlando Magic for basketball, Seattle Sea Hawks for football (because my best friend/roommate is from Seattle, so I am forced to only watch the Sea Hawks play, I do like D-Jacks though, so it’s not like I don’t know anything about the team)
- Sounds like you are pretty good at Fantasy Baseball, what’s your secret?
- I am not all that much better than the people I play with. I used to play on the ESPN Fantasy games, and I managed have several good seasons, including winning 1 league in 2001. Since I didn’t feel like paying for Fantasy, I began playing with my friends on Yahoo!. Since then, I have been the regular season champion of our league for 3 straight years, and winning all the way in 2005. A couple of my friends are really good and keep me honest, but I just out-manage others by staying active. Reading and knowing about as many players as I can, not limiting to the Mets. ESPN is a good source for many Fantasy news, but if you study hard and know your strategy, you don’t need to always follow their advices, because your opponent read the same thing as well! Activity won’t bring you championship, but it’s pretty damn helpful.
- Do you play any other Fantasy Sports games other than baseball?
- I used to play Basketball on ESPN, but that ended when I stopped paying for games. I played it again last year on Yahoo! with my co-workers, led the whole season but lost the Championship games because my picks for the first 3 rounds (Arenas, Pierce, and I forgot the 3rd one) all had season ending injuries. I also play some free ESPN games here and there, but not as committed.
- Do you have a contact email?
- Yes! As of 8/13, I finally set up our domain email accounts. Now you can email me at [spliao at hakanin dot com]
Hope these can answer some of your question, feel free to leave comments or ask me more question, I will make sure to answer all of them!
